History of St. Joseph High School
1956-1988
The year 1956, saw the birth of this esteemed institution, which was inaugurated at the hands of Rt. Rev. Andrew D’Souza, the Bishop of Poona and managed by the Poona Diocesan Educational Society. The school is a tale of remarkable grit and determination of Mr. Joseph, who lived in the heart of Ghorpuri, with trains running on either sides, amidst the ruins of a deserted graveyard, he ventured to stand firm through all times of trials and tribulations to accomplish his mission of spreading knowledge to the underprivileged children of class I to IV. The reins of governance were passed on to the congregation of Sisters of Our Lady of Fatima in 1963 with Sr. Seraphine James taking over as the first Principal of St. Joseph up to 1966. She was a role model to the other sisters who took over the administration in the years that followed. They were:
1966-73 Sr. Fatima Perumayan
1973-78 Sr. Agatha Kollamkunnel
1978-83 Sr. Ines Panakal
1983-86 Sr. Fatima Perumayan
Then the baton was passed on to Mrs. D’Monte, a layperson, in the year 1986. Later it was taken over by the Salesian Sisters of Don Bosco as Sr. Thelma became the Principal from 1987 to 1988. The year 1984 saw the extension of classes V to VII. The sisters took up this herculean task of imparting education and developing a thirst to educate the underprivileged of Ghorpuri area.
